I always watch my rear end at stops. I keep the bike in 1st if I have to move up. And I have a BACKOFF! modulator installed on my tail. I do all that and I still might get plowed from the rear. Just do your best to minimize risk.
As for elderly drivers, they are not any worse than any other demographic group. Idiot drivers come from all ages! Any rider that doesn't respect and look out for larger vehicles needs to get over the fact that an accident might be someone else's fault. It's your ass--protect it.
